more sophisticated scientific studies. In this phase, it is aimed to increase the functionality of the product, to add a new function to the product, to devel- op the effectiveness of the product by adapting new features and by improv- ing the design. “Technology develop- ment” is required for that reason. Even though there are powerful institutes in Turkey that are capable of conduct- ing R&D projects at that level, this is the area we need to improve. The R&D studies at that level are performed by taking support from the R&D depart- ments of the companies and universi- ties. The HVAC&R sector in Turkey can achieve this kind of projects by working with academicians with the support of professional organizations’ activities on cooperation between university-industry, to a certain extent. But, this area is an area, which should be developed and where we should get better. In the third phase of R&D activities, there are scientific studies; these form the basis of technological development studies. These type of studies cannot be performed by commercial founda- tions, but only universities and research institutes. Commercial foundations may be a financial supporter of these studies and take part in the studies with their expert engineers. By being inspired with those studies, the companies could de- termine the pathy towards a new tech- nological development and innovation. From this aspect, the fact that we han- dle our R&D studies as a whole will pro- vide the realization of the expectations above the level of R&D. Friterm Inc, an R&D culture of 20 years. The R&D studies in Friterm have been ongoing almost for 20 years. In accord- ance with new legal procedures, our R&D Department has received its R&D Center certification in 2017. The R&D studies in Friterm carried out by three sub-divisions: The first and major one is “Thermal and Constructive Design” division. Both new product designs and product development studies are real- ized with the initiative of thermal de- sign by using heat transfer and thermo- dynamic sciences. On the constructive design side, the design of fanned prod- ucts such as dry cooler, evaporator, and condenser, which employ metal chasing structure and is handled. This division handles easy-looking, but crit- ical details: performance parameters such as the decreases in sound level and pressure. The sound level became very important throughout the world at the point that we have reached. The products above a certain level of sound may not receive acceptance in foreign markets. In the thermal design side, as for the heat exchangers that are air-cooled and finned tubed, we are working on the subjects that help enhance heat trans- fer in the airside. We currently have an ongoing TÜBİTAK project related to this subject. We have a very important advantage over the software that we use during product designing: We have a flexible software infrastructure, which is devel- oped by our own software division and, The air-conditioning sector in Turkey can achieve in working with academician staff with the support of professional organizations’ activities on cooperation between university-industry, to a certain extent.
