he Turkish Green Building Council (Çevre Dostu Binalar Derneği, ÇEDBİK) was estab- lished in 2007 as a non-governmen- tal organization (NGO). ÇEDBİK’s mis- sion is to develop a more sustainable built environment in Turkey. It aims to create public awareness about the ne- cessity of green buildings, to encour- age the development of the building industry in line with the principles of sustainability. In this context, ÇEDBİK participates different projects with lo- cal authorities and universities, devel- ops green building guidelines, organ- izes educational programs, provides networking for the sector. ÇEDBİK has been granted Full Council status by the World Green Building Council (WGBC) since June 2012. The Turkish Green Building Council is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Euro- pean Regional Network (ERN) of the WGBC. Furthermore, it cooperates with other Green Building Councils around the world and the local construction sector. ÇEDBİK has about 100 prom- inent members from very diverse sec- tors such as construction, real estate, finance, construction materials, facility management, etc. who wish to devel- op and influence sustainability in the Turkish construction industry. B.E.S.T Residential Certificate Systems evaluating the environmen- tal impacts of buildings and their sur- roundings are very effective tools in the green transformation of the construc- tion industry. ÇEDBİK is currently work- ing on the adaptation of green certifica- tion systems for buildings specific to the local geography, climate, and cul- ture. In this context, ÇEDBİK developed B.E.S.T (Ecological and Sustainable De- sign in Buildings) Residential Certifica- tion system, which can be implement- ed for new residential projects in Turkey. More than 100 academicians, non-gov- ernmental organizations and sector representatives contributed on the de- velopment of B.E.S.T Residential Guide- line. The system was launched at the 2 nd International Green Buildings Sum- mit held in Turkey, in 2013. B.E.S.T Residential Certification system aims to reduce the negative impact of the built environment on environment and its habitants by designing and con- structing healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. The target of B.E.S.T Residential Certificate is to create healthy communities, a livable environment, and an improved econ- omy. Besides, this certificate aims to improve the level of building standards. While measuring sustainability in the built environment, it tries to reach the optimum building solution. • New Residential buildings, within the scope of the B.E.S.T national certif- icate, are evaluated under 9 cate- gories: • Integrated Green Project Manage- ment • Land Use • Water Efficiency • Energy Efficiency • Health and Wellbeing • Material and Resources • Residential Life • Operation and Maintenance • Innovation Projects pursuing B.E.S.T Residential Certification system earn points for var- ious green building strategies across 9 categories based on the number of points achieved. Project can earn one of four rating levels: Certified, Good, Very Good or Excellent. T ÇEDBİK’s B.E.S.T Residential Certification System 44 2020 Actual
